In Memoriam: Miriam Makeba

The sounds of Africa are a little faded, softer and infinitely sadder. Our golden song bird has been silenced and no more will our world be filled with her beautiful songs. Taped recordings, CD's, faded black and white films and recordings of live shows are all that remain of our caged song bird, Mama Africa - this great and wonderful soul of Africa.

Africa Heritage Society recognises Miriam Makeba as one of Africa's finest music legends. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends. Africa & the rest of the world has lost a truly amazing heroine who touched millions through her powerful lyrics. Africa Heritage Society will pass on your messages of condolence to her family.

"I remember Mama Africa's music from when I was very young as my parents played it all the time. My favorite was Pata Pata. In the 70's her music was played a lot on Radio Tanzania. I never had the opportunity to see her perform live in concert. Besides singing she was an actress. She did a wonderful job playing the mother in the film, Sarafina. Miriam Makeba 'Mama Africa' may be gone but has left us beautiful music and will be remembered forever. "

OLIVA FUMBUKA (South Africa)

"May you rest in peace forever. You will always be remebered.

JEROME DUNFORD KASSEMBE (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA)

"Yes, my first meeting with MAMA AFRICA was in 1969 in London, England when I was a student and later on as a Broadcast Journalist with the BBC LONDON. After years and years of foll0wing her musical life at work with the BBC and after my retirement from the Voice of America here in Washington, D.C. hardly a weekend passes without my \"full blast\" of Miriam Makeba\'s music on my system. At 57 years old I regard myself as a true sister of Miriam and will remain so to the end of my life just like she said years ago, \"I will die perfoming my music\" and she did so.

My mother played her music to me as a baby and a small child growing up in Zimbabwe and Mozambique in the 1960\'s. My mother treasured her LP and I have it still. Her songs helped mould my life and values, her priceless gift to so many. Her songs will continue to bring joy for many generations.

"I will live to remember Mama Afrika Miriam Makeba for the rest of my life for her soul captivating melodious and scintillating powerfull rhythms that shook the hell out of me and inspired me with hope for justice, human dignity and a better world! She was more than a mother to me. I started listening to her music during my tender age while south africa was still engulfed with apartheid inhumanity and I could feel her message of pain and anguish in those times when the world was not listening and the "God" of Justice became so ellusive! But Quiet she never kept and Tired she never became! She kept on pleading for the Children of Africa. She kept on reminding the Civilised World that Nelson Mandela was still innocently locked up in prison by the racists booers and his children were being slaughtered mercilessly in south africa simply because of the colour of their skin! Not for their intelligence but the colour of the skin!Until she died like a Hero in a foreign land still fighting like a warrior reminding the civilised world of the THIN LINE THAT SEPARATES LOVE FROM HATE!May His Allmighty God Rest Her Beautifull Soul In Eternal Peace,Amen. You will always be part of us through your Soulfull Music in our presence.God Bless you Mandela Nelson Matiba, the Father of Africa!"

"I met her on the Cosby Show(as a viewer). I don't know how I remebered the face and the voice, years later, when I was in colloge and I started to collect her CDs. I fell in love with her voice, music and spirit. I got a chance to see her in contest and it was one of the most beautiful days of my life. She was as lively in person as she was in her biography. I have learned to respect this woman for her songs, her life, her happiness and her strength as she stood up and represented her country accross the world.
She is mama Afica, no other woman on the continent has touched the heart and souls of both Africans and others. She was brilliant in Sarafina!
I can go on and on! She made me fall in love with her country without ever been there.
I love her!"

Muhidin Issa Michuzi (Tanzania)

"I will never forget that day in Dar es salaam that not only I saw you performing live on stage, but also getting that rare opportunity to exchanging a few words. I was also overwhelmed with you 'Marahaba' response to my 'shikamoo'. It was just like my late mother's. From there the whole night seemed like a few minutes and not two solid hours that you performed. It wa a dream come true to seeing our true Mother Africa in limb. Can\'t believe you are gone. Forever. We loved you but He loved you most. Rest in eternal peace Mama."

"She has been a wonderful gift to the world and a treasure to South Africans because we are able to claim her as our own even though she belonged to the world in many ways. Mama Makeba is a reminder of the fullness of African Beauty, She reprimand’s us to stay true to ourselves and because of her we will teach our daughters to be true, humble, respectful, independent in their ways and thinking, and to never ever forget who they are, where they come from and - because of Mama Makeba -where they can go. I doubt Her soul will rest, Her work is not done, but I pray for peace in Her soul as She continues to inspire and guide us. Let us never forget what She stood for, let us never stop representing Her, let the lives of our daughters keep the legend that She is alive for the sake of Africa and Ubuntu. Condolences to the family. From Kea Modise."

"Oh Mama, although I am young, I remember how I used to steal my late father's records and play them while I cleaned the house. Welela, Aluta Continua, Saduva, the list is endless. Those songs had a huge impact on my life and my perception of South African music in general. As soon as I knew that my parents would soon be back home, I would carefully return the vinal to where I got it from. The one thing I know for sure, the music kept me away from mischief because since I listened to it on borrowed time, I cherished every moment of it. All at the tender age of 14 or 15. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to listen to your music. May your soul rest in peace. "
