The Africa Heritage Society ("AHS") is a Pan-African, non-profit association of corporates and individuals who constitute the membership of the body. The principal aim of AHS is to put Africa and its various interests at the centre of business strategy. Further, it seeks to understand, shape, document and promote business best practices in Africa. Accordingly AHS considers vital the issues of sustainable profitability, social responsibility, Black Empowerment, all resting on a full and clear understanding of the African experience, African history, African values, environmental concerns and the African political milieu.

CELEBRATING A PIONEER OF DEMOCRACY IN AFRICA

Nosiviwe Maphisa- NqakulaThe Africa Heritage Society's Human Rights Forum on Saturday the 6th of February hosted the Co-Ministers of Home Affairs from Zimbabwe, Mr Giles Mutsekwa and Mr Kembo Mohadi at the Inanda Country Club. South Africa's Minister of Correctional Services, Nosiviwe Maphisa-Nqakula was in attendance to welcome the guests to South Africa. The theme centred on the issues of rebuilding Zimbabwe. Prior to her current cabinet portfolio, Nosiviwe Maphisa Nqakula was the Minister of Home Affairs in South Africa. She was instrumental in the documentation process that resulted in the legalisation of some South Africans in Zimbabwe. Her prior role at Home Affairs allowed her to relate well to the issues that pertained to the Zimbabwean cirisis. She made a heartfelt plea to the people of Zimbabwe to sit down and talk as this was the only solution to take the country forward.
The event was graced by several Zimbabwean Business Leaders such as the Meikles Group Moxon & MawereChairman John Moxon, James Makamba, Trust Bank Head William Nyemba. Notably, Mr Mutumwa Mawere, in his speech commended Mr William Nyemba, for inspiring the black community in Zimbabwe, as he was the first black person in Zimbabwe to start a bank, Trust Merchant Bank (NMB).

Mr Mutumwa Mawere, the brainchild behind the Society, also made mention of the historical date of the 11th of February. The 11th of February is anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from prison. The situation in Zimbabwe has seen a flood of economic migrants into South Africa. Commenting on this phenomenon, Mr Mutumwa Mawere said" The Human Spirit cannot be stopped".

Mohadi kThe theme that both Ministers brought to the event was that of rebuilding the nation and working together. The Ministers reiterated that, though they were from the different political parties in Zimbabwe, they had struck a cordial working relationship. Since taking over as co-ministers, they credit themselves with having passed over 30 statutes in Zimbabwe. Speaking to the Businessman in attendance, Mr Kembo Mohadi said" The Zimbabwean government is willing to drop all charges against political activists and specified business people who are currently leaving outside of the country". He went on to assure investors on issues of rule of law in Zimbabwe stating," The Zimbabwe police force has adequately managed to protect both human life and property within the dictates of the Zimbabwean constitution. I therefore would without any hesitation advise that, all investors willing to invest in Zimbabwe should do so without any safety reservations. The principle law of the country which is the constitution has created and enabling environment for all forms of legal investment."

On the issue of specified business people, Mr Giles Mutsekwa informed the guests that, the Mutsekwagovernment was willing to review the laws around the specifications of individuals. All in all, the two leaders positioned Zimbabwe as a prime investment destination that is on its way to recovery and urged the Zimbabwean people in the diaspora to return home to rebuild the country.

The spokesperson for the Forum Mr McKenzie Tafira informed the guests that the 6th of February will be set aside as the Africa Heritage Zimbabwe Human Rights Day. Mr Tafira detailed the vision behind the Forum which included aspects such as lobbying as a collective. In order to ensure that the goals of the Forum can be realised, members of the African Heritage Society or other well-wishers are encouraged to make contributions to the African Heritage Human Rights Forum as it is a Non Profit Making organisation.
